Members Helping Members Since 1981

Are you researching Jewish family history and looking for a Chicago area network of experts and enthusiasts?

We help members collect, preserve, and perpetuate the records and history of their ancestors and serve as a resource for the worldwide community to research their Chicago area Jewish roots.

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois (JGSI) is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization established in 1981 and now with over 300 members.

Monthly Meetings

JGSI hosts our monthly meetings in Northbrook with speakers, assistance using research materials in our over 800 volume library, and volunteers at computer help stations.

We hope to see you at our next meeting.

“Insight into FamilySearch and The Wilmette Family History Center”
Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018,  at the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois. Suzanne Hoffman's presentation begins at 2 p.m. at Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook, Ill.  In her presentation, she will look at FamilySearch.org and the relationship FamilySearch has with JewishGen and JRI Poland. She’ll also briefly touch on the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and finish up by talking about the Family History Center in Wilmette and why that is a unique resource for local record searches.

“Researching Jewish Ancestors on Ancestry Library Edition”
Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, 2 p.m. at the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois. Genealogist Jane G. Haldeman will speak at
Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook, Ill. Her presentation will focus on European and Jewish records, the similarities and differences between the subscription and library editions of Ancestry, and the wealth of Ancestry resources available at the library.

At each regular JGSI monthly meeting, its “help desk” will operate from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Member volunteers will access online databases and answer genealogical questions one-on-one for members and visitors as time allows.

The JGSI library has more than 800 volumes of interest to Jewish family historians. Many are available for borrowing by JGSI members for a limited time. All are available for perusing from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at each regular monthly meeting.
